About Zenotal
Room is the whole idea.
Zenotal began with a simple observation, made over twenty years of working in fast cities: people don't lack effort. They lack room—to move, to recover, to notice, to choose. The studio is that idea made physical, in Halifax.
Why Zenotal
Challenge and care belong together.
A person doesn't arrive in the same state every day. Some days movement needs resistance and rhythm; some days precision, support or a slower pace. Zenotal is designed so those needs belong to one continuing practice rather than separate identities—and so the body, the most accessible place to begin, can carry what it learns into the rest of life.
The studio is the physical and community heart of it. Programs for working life and a small library of practices extend the same principles into the places life actually happens.
Where it comes from
Eastern pacing, Atlantic light.
The way we think about room comes from years lived in cities that taught the value of the space between things: the pause before a response, the unfilled corner, the tea poured before the conversation. It arrives in Halifax without costume—as pacing, materials and hospitality—and meets a place that already understands weather, patience and the long view.
We shape clay into a vessel; it is the space within that makes it useful.Laozi · Tao Te Ching, ch. 11
The people
Built to be taught by a faculty.
Zenotal is designed to be taught by a faculty, not a personality. A shared culture—clear observation, useful explanation, choices offered without judgement—matters more to us than any one teacher, including the founder. The first faculty will be introduced as they join.
Zenotal was founded by Joe Peng, who spent two decades leading communications and transformation work in Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore before training as a movement and attention teacher. He designs the practice, calibrates the faculty and, most days, would rather the room got the credit.

How we teach
Clear, attentive and human.
Observe
We look at the person and the room before adding information.
Explain
Cues are specific and useful. Expertise should make the practice easier to understand, not make the teacher the centre of it.
Offer choice
Adjusting, pausing and taking another route are part of practice, not signs of falling behind.
Keep boundaries
Touch, personal information and referrals need clear consent and stay within non-clinical scope.
A Halifax faculty and community
The room takes shape through its people.
We welcome introductions from yoga teachers, Slow Resistance Training coaches and community partners in Halifax Regional Municipality who share an interest in clear teaching, useful strength and restorative practice. The faculty, location and partnerships are still being developed.
Tell us about your teaching or a possible collaboration. If you are curious about practising here, join the early list for confirmed opening updates.
